Hornets Win SIRR Mississippi Division Crown
The regular season is a thing of the past for the Nashville Hornets as they turned their attention to the postseason, which began February 19 in Carlyle. Nashville ended the regular season on a high note as they defeated DuQuoin 69-38 to capture the SIRR Conference Mississippi Division Championship.
Nashville finished with a conference record of 9-1, just ahead of Pinckneyville who finished the conference slate with an 8-2 record. The Hornets finished with an overall regular season record of 28-2.
It didn’t take long for the Hornets to be in firm control of the contest as Nashville outscored the Indians 25-5 over the first eight minutes of play. Five different Hornets got in the scoring column in the first, led by Carson Parker with ten points in the frame.
DuQuoin opened up the second on a 8-2 run, but the Hornets ended any thought of a comeback. After the Indians cut the Hornets lead to 27-13, Nashville used a 9-0 run to push the lead to 23. At half, the Hornets were firmly in control as they led 37-15.
The result was never really in question in the second half, as the Hornets kept their foot on the pedal. Nashville outscored DuQuoin 21-10 in the third quarter and held a commanding 58-25 lead after three quarters of play.
The starters were able to sit out the majority of the fourth quarter, as Nashville cruised to a 69-38 win and an outright conference title.
After the game Coach Wayne Harre talked about winning conference. “Conference Championship is always good to have. It’s nice getting those. Winning it outright is nice. But, I told them, now we have to get ready for the postseason. Play every possession like it’s our last one. We have to make sure we are ready to go and give it our best shot.”
