Gilbert H. Greten

Gilbert H. Greten, 86, of New Athens, IL; born on August 16, 1932 in Lively Grove, IL; passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the Freeburg Care Center in Freeburg, IL.

Mr. Greten was a truck driver for 19 years with Behnken Truck Service. He then drove for Todd Uniform Service and Angelica Linen Service. He was also a farmer. Gilbert was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church. He was a United States Army Veteran serving as a corporal in the Korean War. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 50.

He was preceded in death by his parents – Anton and Theresa, nee Buss, Greten. His wife – Aileene, nee Geppert, Greten whom he married on November 18, 1961 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Posen, IL and who passed away on May 20, 1999. He was also preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

He is survived by his children – David Greten of New Athens, IL; Debbie (Kenny) Schoenherr of Lively Grove, IL; Denise Greten of Wentzville, MO; Dennis Greten of New Athens, IL. His grandchildren – Jerrica Greten; Dylan Schoenherr; Kaelyn Schoenherr. One sister – Rita Pour of New Athens, IL. Three brothers – Urban (Mary Ann) Greten of St. Libory, IL; Lambert (Carolyn) Greten of Fairview Heights, IL; Jerry (Pat) Greten of Marissa, IL. Six sisters-in-law – Maxine Henry of Waterloo, IL; Georgia Shields of Freeburg, IL; Sister Marlene Geppert, OSF of St. Louis, MO; Pat Miller of Fairview Heights, IL; Hazel (Scott) Biggs of Oakdale, IL; Gail Geppert of El Sequndo, CA. Four brothers-in-law – Stanley (Hattie) Geppert of Nashville, IL; Eugene Geppert of Nashville, IL; Robert Geppert of Nashville, IL; Howard (Jean) Geppert of New Athens, IL.

  Friends called at St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, IL on Monday, February 25, 2019 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm (Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 5:00pm) and on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 from 9:00am to 10:00am.

  A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, IL on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 10:00am with Father Mark Reyling officiating.

Burial will be held at St. Agatha Catholic Cemetery in New Athens, IL.

Memorials may be made to St. Agatha School.
