Hornets Win Regional Championship

For the fourth consecutive year, the Nashville Hornets are Regional Champions. The Hornets defeated Carlyle and Wesclin to win the IHSA Class 2A Carlyle Regional. Nashville will play West Frankfort in the IHSA Class 2A DuQuoin Sectional on February 27 at 7 p.m. The Hornets are 31-2 on the season.

Nashville had little trouble in their postseason opener as they defeated the host Carlyle Indians 52-21 in the Regional Semi-Finals of the IHSA Class 2A Carlyle Regional. The Hornettes defense frustrated the Indians as Nashville defeated Carlyle for the second time this season.

Carlyle held the early lead as five points from Caleb Darr had the Indians up 5-4 early in the first quarter. It would be the last time Carlyle would lead. The Hornets ended the first quarter on a 11-0 run, capped off by a three pointer from Carson Parker, and took a 15-5 lead into the second quarter.

The Hornets continued the momentum into the second frame of play as Nashville began the quarter on a 12-3 run to take a commanding 27-8 lead. After the teams traded buckets, Nashville went into the break with a 29-10 lead.

The lead grew further in the third quarter as Nashville outscored Carlyle 17-6 to put any thoughts of a comeback by the host Indians to bed.

Nashville was in cruise control in the fourth quarter, as the starters came out of the game for the Hornets. At the final buzzer, the Hornets led 52-21.

The Hornets defense kept Carlyle off-balance all game, something coach Wayne Harre talked about after the game. “I thought our defense set the tone early. I thought we did a good job of getting in their grill a little bit and guarding. I thought we didn’t give them any easy looks, which was important to us.”

Harre also talked about the Hornets getting their 30th win of the season. “I thought our defense set the tone early. I thought we did a good job of getting in their grill a little bit and guarding. I thought we didn’t give them any easy looks, which was important to us.”

The win over Carlyle clinched a berth in the Regional Championship, where the Hornets would match up against Wesclin. The Hornets withstood a scoring barrage from Wesclin’s Nate Brede to grab a 45-30 win over the Warriors.

Nashville’s defense would be strong early. Nashville jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Wesclin scored their only point of the first quarter with 1:17 remaining in the frame on a free throw by Brede. Nashville led 9-1 after eight minutes of play.

The Nashville Hornets won their fourth straight Regional Championship with a 45-30 win over Wesclin on February 22. Nashville advanced to the DuQuoin Sectional where they will take on West Frankfort.
