Hornets Win Sophomore Tournament

The NCHS Sophomore Hornets team takes the top crown at the 43rd annual Murphysboro Tournament.

Saturday, Feb. 29th, the Sophomore Hornets began play in the 43rd Annual Murphysboro Tournament. They opened play against Hamilton County. The Hornets were able to open the tournament on a high note as they claimed a 59 to 48 victory. Nolan Heggemeier highlighted the scoring for the Hornets, as he drained five threes in route to a 33 point afternoon. Kolten Gajweski also climbed into double figures after finishing with 13 points. Following a five day layoff, the team was back in action Thursday, March 5th against Trico. Trey Reinburg’s clutch gene was on full display as he was able to hit a three to send it to overtime before knocking down a triple at the buzzer to seal the win in overtime over the Pioneers. The two three pointers were part of a nine point day for Reinburg. Gajewski led the team with 15 points, while Carter Shoenherr added 10 more. Two days later, the Hornets squared off against Pinckneyville for all the marbles. The team was able to take the tournament crown after a 55 to 44 victory. Heggemeier guided the team with 20 points. Saxton Hoepker also collected double figures, finishing with 10. Gajweski and Schoenherr rounded out the scoring with eight apiece. The Hornets witnessed two players accept All-Tournament Team honors in the form of Heggemeier and Gajewski. The win means the Hornets have now won back to back Murphy Tournaments and four out the last five overall. The team also won the 100th Annual Torrence Tournament in Sparta in February. The team finished their campaign with a record of 14 wins and 2 losses.
