The 76th annual Washington County Fair has been canceled, according to the fair board Tuesday morning.
Washington County Fair Board President Rhonda Muller said in a release:
“For the past 76 years the Washington County Fair has provided opportunities for kids and families to show their animals, produce and fine arts and to enjoy the food, fellowship and fun of our county fair. So, it is with sincere regret that the Washington County Fair Board is announcing the cancellation of the 2020 Washington County Fair.
”The Board has gone through some difficult weeks of uncertainty as our county, our state and our country have struggled with the coronavirus pandemic. The main concern of the Washington County Fair Board during these weeks has been the health and safety of those who participate in and those who attend the annual county fair. The decision to cancel the fair was made following conversations with the Washington County Health Department and local officials, all of whom are required to follow the Governor’s Restore Illinois Safety Plan. The Safety Plan does not allow for festivals or large group events until Phase 5 of the Plan has been reached. Currently, Washington County is in Phase 3 of the Safety Plan, with a move to Phase 4 anticipated on June 26 at the very earliest.
“Again, our concern has been and always will be the health and safety of all of those involved in the Washington County Fair. If we continue to work together as a community to get through this difficult time, we will come out of the pandemic as an every stronger community.“
Mueller concluded that the board appreciates all of the community support and everyone is looking forward to resuming the fair in 2021.
