Centralia Man Charged With DUI Following Fatal Accident Thursday

Update 8/29/20 with corrected coroner information

A Wayne City man was killed in a two vehicle accident near Irvington on Thursday evening, and a Centralia man has been charged with driving under the influence following the crash.

The Illinois State Police said the two vehicle fatal crash occurred on US Route 51 at Carpenter Road, just north of Irvington, Washington County, at approximately 5:01 p.m. Preliminary reports indicate that a 2011 gray Ford Escape driven by Bradley A. Wilson, 39, of Centralia was traveling westbound on Carpenter Road when Wilson allegedly attempted to cross all four lanes of  US Route 51 and failed to yield to oncoming traffic. A white truck tractor semi trailer driven by Charles L. Youngblood, 50, of Wayne City was traveling south on Route 51.

The Escape struck the driver’s side of the semi trailer. Wilson was airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Illinois State Police initially said in a release Youngblood was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead by the Washington County Coroner. But Coroner Mark Styninger said while his office was dispatched to the scene, Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon was the one who pronounced him dead.

Wilson was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to yield at an intersection.

This crash is still being actively being investigated by the Marion County coroner and the Illinois State Police.

The southbound lanes of US Route 51 was  closed for three and a half hours for crash investigation and clean up. No other information will be released at this time, police said.

US 51 southbound was closed approximately 3 ½ hours for crash investigation and scene clean up. No additional information is being released at this time.
