Before Tuesday night’s game against Pinckneyville, the Nashville Hornets recognized the two Seniors on this year’s roster. Jaxon Goforth and Buzz Ritzel, along with their parents, were brought out to center court and thanked for their contributions to Nashville High School.
In the varsity game Nashville defeated Pinckneyville 55-44. The Hornets got off to a strong start and kept the Panthers from scoring for over six minutes. Pinckneyville was able to regroup and battle their way back into the contest, even leading by four points late in the third quarter. The teams were tied 42-42 during the fourth quarter when Nashville went on a big run and outscored the Panthers 13-2 over the last few minutes of the game.
Buzz Ritzel scored 17 points to lead the Hornets, Isaac Turner had 11, Jaxon Goforth put in 10, Kolten Gajewski scored eight, Nolan Heggemeier had seven (all on free throws in the fourth quarter) and Saxton Hoepker added two. Turner and Hoepker were the leading rebounders for the Hornets.
Dre Scott turned in an impressive performance for Pinckneyville and led all scorers with 20 points.
Nashville’s last game of the season was at Chester on Friday night. The Hornets had little trouble with the Yellow Jackets and won 52-22. After a low-scoring first half the Hornets led 19-8. Nashville put the game away when they outscored the Yellow Jackets 23-7 in the third quarter.
Two players were responsible for that third-quarter run. Turner had 15 in the period and finished with 25 total points while Ritzel put in eight in the period and had 14 points for the game. Other scorers were Hayden Robinson with four, Goforth and Hoepker with three each, Radyn Schwartzkopf with two and Carter Schoenherr with one.
For the season the Hornets had a conference record of 10-0 and an overall record of 13-1.
