Nashville – The John C. Atchinson, American Legion Post 110 of Nashville Illinois honored two outstanding members this year. Mr. Clarence Gogolek of DuBois and Mr. Thomas Schroeder of rural Richview were given awards for faithful membership. Mr. Gogolek received an award for 50 years and Mr. Schroeder received an award for 60 years of continuous membership.
These members served their country as much younger men in two wars. Mr. Gogolec, a U.S. Army veteran served in Vietnam and Mr. Schroeder, also an Army veteran, served in Korea.
Presenting these awards was senior vice post commander, Mr. Howard Dinkelmann of Nashville. The John C. Atchinson American Legion post is comprised of veterans from all branches of the service. Their organization continues to meet monthly to provide support to fellow veterans, service their community and carry on American Legion principles and pillars.
Private John C. Atchinson was a member of the Marine Corps detachment onboard the battleship USS Arizona. He was onboad the morning December 7th, 1941 when the ship was struck by bombs that detonated her forward ammunition magazine. Private Atchinson’s body was never recovered.
