in the semifinals of last week’s Red Bud Volleyball Regional Nashville defeated Sparta 25-17, 25-13. The Hornettes jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in the first set. Sparta came back to within two points a few times but Nashville held on. Set two was easier as the Hornettes led by wide margins the entire way,
Hazel Konkel led the hitters with 13 kills, Kirsten Twenhafel had six and Talanie Kozuszek added four. Emily Schnitker had 23 assists. Reese Varel was the leading blocker with four. Daci Finke had 14 digs, Schnitker had eight and Emme Paszkiewicz had five. Paszkiewicz was also the leading server with 11 points and Konkel had eight.
In the regional championship match the Hornettes took on a tough Columbia squad and came out on top 25-21, 21-17. There were several lead changes in the middle of the first set before Nashville took control to grab the win. Columbia held a couple of leads early in the second set but a 14-5 run by Nashville put them on a path to the championship.
The Eagles couldn’t do much to stop the impressive spikes from Konkel, who finished with 19 kills. Varel also added four hits to the offensive attack. Schnitker led in assists with 22 and the leaders in digs were Paszkiewicz with 15 and Valerie Combs with nine. Finke was the top server with 12 points and Schnitker had five.
The Hornettes will play in the Johnston City Sectional this week. Two wins would advance them to the Super-Sectional match at Nashville on Friday night.
