Ashley man killed in car, motorcycle accident on Route 15

A 30-year-old Ashley man has died after a two-vehicle accident at Main and West Railroad streets in Ashley.
According to Washington County Coroner Mark Styninger, Michael S. Pinkston was traveling west on Main Street, also known as Illinois Route 15, at 3:48 p.m. Friday when the motorcycle he was driving crossed over the railroad tracks and struck a white Honda sedan that was headed east and turning north onto West Railroad Street.
It was reported that Pinkston was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the accident, Styninger said. Both occupants of the Honda were transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.
Pinkston, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:03 p.m. by Styninger. That portion of Illinois Route 15 was closed for several hours for the Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit to continue its investigations.
Assisting agencies included the Ashley Fire Department, Washington County Ambulance Service, the Washington County’s Sheriff Department and the Washington County Coroner’s Office.
Toxicology samples were taken for routine test. Styninger stated that the cause of death was massive head trauma and the manner was determined to be accidental. The crash continues to be investigated by both the sheriff’s department and the county coroner’s office.
