A 27-year-old Carbondale man has been charged with multiple drug offenses, including manufacturing the delivery of a large amount of cannabis.
Noel R. Smith appeared in Washington County Court via Zoom on Thursday, where he was advised of charges.
According to charging documents filed with the Washington County Circuit Clerk’s office, Smith was arrested on Dec. 22 for allegedly and “knowingly” possessing more than 5,000 grams of a substance containing cannabis, which is considered a Class X felony.
Smith is also charged with unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Court documents state that he had allegedly in his possession 200 grams or more of a substance that contained codeine.
Online court records indicate that Smith will hire his own attorney. Public defender Dennis Hatch was present for the bond hearing.
Bond was set at $50,000. A preliminary hearing was set for Feb. 16 at 10 a.m.
If convicted of the Class X felony, Smith could receive a prison sentence between 6 and 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).
